Sand Filter: Above normal or excessive force to operate the controlling valve

It is because that there're scoring or jamming with foreign matter or debris.
If this condition persists after rinsing, disassemble the valve to clear. Continued operation of the valve may result in non-sealing condition (damage to spider gasket.) This will lead to water loss to the backwash line to or to inefficient filtration

Sand Filter: What to do if there's dirty water

1. In sufficient filtration time.
2. Heavy contaminants or dirt load.
3. Dirty filter, requires backwashing.
4. Air leaking on suction (influent line).
5. Pump impeller vanes blocked.
6. Insufficient water supply (water level low, blockage).
7. Pump not primed.
8. Incorrect water chemistry.
9. Excessive flow of water for filter size. Foreign matter or debris forced through filter bed and through the under drain.
10. Other restrictions including (pool suction cleaners) resistance from other inline equipment such as strainers. Operating the filter on recirculated will determine if the restriction is in the filter.
11. Clogged or channeled filter media. Perform backwash or regeneration.

Sand Filter: Filter media in the Backwash

1. Excessive quantity of media in the filter.
2. Excessive water flow.
3. Incorrect sized or grade of filter media.

Sand Filter: Filter media returning to swimming Pool/Spa

1. Filter is on recirculate.
2. Verify it is the filter media and not from another source.
3. Damage to the under-drain laterals.
4. Damage or incorrect fit of controlling valve are correct.
5. Incorrect or mixed grades of media in the filter.

Sand Filter: Short filtration cycles

1. Presence of algae or a scale builds up.
2. Check water chemistry.
3. Excessive water flow, check pump size, mains water flow.
4. Filter blocked through calcium etc. clean filter media.

Sand Filter: Small Flow rate

1. Check the filter basket.
2. Check to see whether there is leakage in the inlet section of pump.
3. Check to see whether there is congestion of inlet and outlet section of pipes.
4. Clean the filter and replace with new filter material.
5. The water level of swimming is too low.
6. Pump is not filled with water.
7. Pump vanes are congested.
8. Fail to use filter basket or clean it at regular intervals.
9. The operating speed of pump is too slow due to low voltage.

Sand Filter: High Operating Voltage

1. Water inlet of swimming pool and water system is too small.
2. Some valves have been switched off in the return circuit.
3. The pump is too big. Check and select a suitable one.

Sand Filter: Controlling valve function instructions

FILTER
Switch valve to "FILTER" setting to filter water normally and vacuums foreign substances on a daily basis.
BACKWASH
Backwash the filter for at least 2 minutes to get rid of accumulated impurities of in the sand filter.Check from the sight glass (Fig. 1) to see that the water flowing through the sight glass runs clear, which means that your filter is clean.
RINSE
After the procedure of "BACKWASH", turn off the water supply of pump first before you rotate the controlling valve to the "RINSE'' setting. Then turn on the filter to operate for 30 seconds to 1min. The procedure will discharge the sewage left in the sand during the BACKWASH procedure into the sewage pipe in case the sewage flows back to the swimming pool. After rinsing, turn off the pump and rotate the controlling valve back to "FILTER" and the sand filter will start normal filtering again.
WASTE
To drain out water directly or lower the water level. When there are abundant impurities in the pool, operate the function to discharge sewage through sewage pipe directly instead of flowing through sand filter.
RECIRCULATE
To circulate water without going through the sand filter.
CLOSED
To stop water from flowing between the pump and sand filter.
WINTER
When in winter while the swimming pool is not in use, open up the drainage cover at the filter bottom, locate the controlling valve to "WINTER" or position between every 2 functions to drain water in the controlling valve.

Sand Filter: Preparation before installation

1. The sand tank must be placed on the cement board, the product-specific system bottom plate or a similar firm ground to ensure that the sand tank will not move when the multi-directional valve is used.
2. The location of the sand tank should consider the connection of the pipeline to facilitate future operation and maintenance.
3. The label of the sand tank should be located in a visible position on the front, which is convenient for reference when there is a problem.

Sand Filter: Operation Principles

Sand filter is intended to separate the foreign substances in the water by utilizing special filtering sand. When water with impurities is brought in controlling valves of sand filter and gets through sand bed, those impurities will be segregated by the sand bed. While filtered water will get through the drainpipe from the sand filter bottom and drain out from the outlet of controlling valve and flow back to pipe for use.
After use of sand filter for some time, the accumulated impurities stuck in the sand filter will cause resistance to water flow and lead to lower water quantity, which means the filter needs cleaning. For normal cleansing, the sand filter should start "BACKWASH" procedure first, and then "RINSE'' and finally go back to "FILTER" function.

Sand Filter: Testing the Sand Filter

1. Ensure the amount of sand in the tank is appropriate and all the pipe and pump are well connected.
2. Press down the handle of the controlling valve and rotate it to BACKWASH. If there is too many leaves or mud in your swimming pool, clean them away first as it might congest the tube.
3. After fill water and exhaust the air from the pump, turn on your pump accordingly. Remember to make sure that all tube and valve of the inlet and outlet are open or it will damage the product and cause injuries. When the water volume from the waster outlet becomes stable, let the pump keep running for over 2 minutes. The purpose of the BACKWASH is to rinse out the impurities and the small sand.
4. Tun off your pump. Press down the handle of the controlling valve and rotate it to RINSE. Turn on your pump and wait until the water flow becomes clear. (about 30 seconds to 1 minute.) Turn off your pump. Press down the handle of the controlling valve and rotate it to FILTER. Turn on your pump. Now the sand filter is at the normal stage of filtering and will filter out the impurities in the water.
5. Adjust the water flow to the desired volume. Double-check if there is leakage and ensure that the parts are well connected.
6. Remember the readings of the meter when the sand filter is normally running. (the reading varies according to different pumps and pipe systems) When the reading in 8 to10 psl (0.55 to 0.69 bar) larger than its normal status, it means the cleaning maintenance should be carried out on the sand filter.

Sand Filter: The Installation of sand filter

Before we install the sand filter, we recommend firstly inspecting if we have received all parts in good condition.
Here're all the parts included in the package. After we confirmed that all parts are well received, we can start to install the item. Here're the installation instruction for your reference.
Step 1: Install the filter tank on the base.
Step 2: Place the center pipe into the filter tank. After that, install the laterals on the center pipe inside the tank.
Step 3???Place the hanger on the top of the filter tank. Hang the transparent tube on the hanger to prevent it from falling down.
Step 4: Add water and sand into the filter tank.
Step 5: Tank out the hanger. Install the control valve and the o-ring on the top of the tank.
Step 6: Install the meter on the controlling valve. After that, secure the controlling valve with clamp kits and screw & nut.
At this moment, we have finished the installation of sand filter itself and can start to connect it with the pump and swimming pool.
Sand Filter: Overall Connection Instructions

Sand Filter: Inlet & Outlet Connection Instructions

Note: Please note that the inlet, outlet and cleaning outlet shown here are the same as the ones stated in the "Overall Connection Instructions" section. The suitable caliber of pipes for connecting inlet and outlet should be of 48mm and 50mm.
1. Connect your pump to sand filter through water inlet.
2. Connect the water outlet to tubes of your swimming pool to go through the filtered clean water back to swimming pool.
3. Connect the cleaning outlet to tubes of sewer for draining waste water.
Note: Ensure that you wrap the inlets and outlets with thread tape for connecting pipes in case of leakage.

Sand Filter: Overall Connection Instructions

1. Water gets into the sand filter through the water inlet and the suspended substance in the water is adsorbed and decomposed by the quartz sand in the filter.
2. And the filtered clean water will get back to the swimming pool through the water outlet.
3. And the waste water along with suspended substances will drain out from the cleaning outlet.

Sand Filter: What you need to know about sand filters

Safety Instruction
1. Children are not allowed to operate this product for safety concerns. Keep children away from the product.
2. Examine and verify all of the filter components are present and well installed before use.
3. Do not change or modify this product.
4. If parts need to be replaced, ensure that they are authorized by the original manufacture or it might cause damage to the product.
Notes regarding placing the sand filter
1. Sand filter should be placed on sturdy surface such as concrete slabs.
2. Ensure that the place near swimming etc. for putting sand filter will not be flooded with water.
3. Do not expose the sand filter to fire or other heating sources.
4. Water quality stabilizer might cause damage to the sand filter. Avoid placing them near the sand filter.
Notes regarding the usage and maintenance
1. At the first time of cleaning the sand filter, given that there are many impurities in the water, it needs repetitive BACKWASH of the sand filter. Normally, newly-built swimming pool requires 2 to 3 times more in its first backwash than normal backwash.
2. Incorrect operation or abuse will cause damage to the product.
3. Ensure you always turn off your pump first when you shift the use of functions of the sand filter to avoid damage to the valve and the pipes.
4. Sand filter should not be moved when operating the controlling valve on the filter.
5. Regularly clean away the hair and similar materials in the whole filtering system for normal operation and longer service life to avoid damage to the valve and the pipes.
6. The filtering sand should be replaced every 4-5 years under appropriate maintenance.

Sand Filter: Filling the Filter Media

1. Before filling the filter media into the filter vessel, do a visual check of the laterals. Look for broken or loose laterals. Replace if necessary.
2. To eliminate stress on the laterals, fill the filter vessel with enough water to provide a cushioning effect when the filter sand is poured in

Sand Filter: What you need to know about plumbing

1. Check that the incoming water pressure is within the filter's recommended working pressure and ensure that a pressure limiting valve is installed if using mains water or a high-pressure pump.
2. Ensure that a foot valve (non-return valve) is installed if the pump is installed 500mm above the water level.
3. If the sand filter is installed below the water level or connected to mains water, isolation valves should be installed before the filter and after the valve. This will prevent water flow during any routine maintenance that may be required.
4. Minimize the length of pipe and the number of fittings to minimize friction loss to ensure maximum efficiency.
5. Connect all plumbing to the Multiport Valve taking care that all joints are glued or tightened securely to prevent leaking.
6. To prevent breakage and damage to the pump and Multiport Valve, use only pipe sealants specifically formulated for plastics.
7. Ensure solvents are not excessively applied to fittings as this could run into O rings and create sealing problems.
8. Do not over tighten fittings or adapters.

Sand Filter: What 's backwashing and the importance of it

What's backwashing
The function of backwashing is to separate the deposited particles from filter media grains and flush them from the filter bed. Backwashing is achieved by reversing the flow of water through the filter bed at a fairly high flow rate. This high flow rate expands the filter bed, and the water collects the debris taking it to waste.
Importance of Backwashing
The importance of backwashing cannot be overstated. Dense filter mediacan become "packed" without proper and frequent enough backwashing. Debris will remain trapped and create channeling within the filter bed. This will result in the filter bed exhausting early. Moreover, if debris is not flushed from the media grains, the filter bed will become dirtier and dirtier as time goes on until the filter operation fails.

Conditions for Backwashing
1. The flow rate through the filter bed decreases until it is insufficient to meet the demand.
2. The removal efficiency of the filter bed decreases to the point where the effluent quality deteriorates and is no longer acceptable.
3. When the pressure gauge reading is 50 kPa (7.2 psi) higher than the startup pressure.
4. If the filter is connected to mains water, pressure rise is not an accurate indicator as mains pressure tends to fluctuate. It is best to rely on the actual flow rate.
NOTE: We recommends that you backwash a swimming pool sand filter in a residential installation at least once a month.Backwashing Instructions
1.Switch off the Pump/ Close the Inlet Valve.
NOTE: If a pump is installed, switch the pump on and off, instead of closing and opening the Inlet Valve.
2. Release the filter's pressure by loosening Pressure Release Valve until the Pressure Gauge needle drops to zero <0>.
3. Retighten Pressure Release Valve.
4. Depress and turn Handle 180° to the BACKWASH position. In the BACKWASH position, the water flow is automatically reversed through the filter so that it is directed to the bottom of the filter vessel, up through the sand, flushing the previously trapped dirt and debris out the waste line.
5. Switch on the Pump/ Open the Inlet Valve. Backwash water will flow out through drainpipe.
6. When the backwash water in the sight glass appears clear, switch off the Pump/ Close the Inlet Valve.
7. Depress and turn the handle to the RINSE position. In the RINSE water flow is directed through the filter bed and out of the filter through the backwash outlet. This process settles the filter media bed into place and ensures any dirt or debris is rinsed out of the filter, preventing possible return to the pool.
8. Switch on the Pump/ Open the Inlet Valve. Rinse water will flow out through the drainpipe.
9. When the rinse water in the sight glass appears clear. Switch off the Pump/ Close the Inlet Valve.
10. Depress and turn the handle to the Filter position and Switch on the Pump/ Open the Inlet Valve for normal operation.

Sand Filter: The maintenance of sand filter

To ensure the maximum life of the selected filter media, please follow the procedures below:
1. Backwash the filter regularly according to the instructions set under 'Backwashing'.
2. Refer to the specifications of the filter media used and implement regeneration procedures accordingly.
3. Maintain a correct chemical balance your pool/spa water.
The chemical balance of water is a relationship between its Ph, total alkalinity, calcium hardness and water temperature.
The water must be maintained at all times to the following:
PH LEVEL: BETWEEN 7.2 & 7.8.
TOTAL ALKALINITY: BETWEEN 80 & 150ppm.
CALCIUM HARDNESS: BETWEEN 150 & 300ppm.And within these tolerances be balanced to the Langelier Saturation Index within a range of -0.2 to +0.2.
NOTE: Testing kits are available to test the water yourself or alternately bring a sample of the water to a professional pool and spa shop.
4. Mains water and rural water supplies need to be monitored. Saturation (life) in mains water or bore (rural) will vary depending on water quality.
5. To prevent damage to the pump and filter and for proper operation of the system, clean pump strainer and skimmer baskets regularly.
6.Replace the pressure gauge if faulty readings are observed.

Sand Filter: What is a sand filter?

Sand filters use specially graded sand as the filter media. The water enters the tank through the diffuser. As the water goes down through the bed of sand, the dirt and debris are trapped between the grains of sand. When the water reaches the bottom of the filter, it enters the laterals and is returned to the pool. Sand filters filter out debris down to about 40 microns in size. Anything smaller than 40 microns will probably not be filtered out.

Solar Shower: Mounting the Solar Shower (Concerete/Masonry Installation Only)

1. Choose a location for shower that receives the most direct sunlight.
2. Use the base plate/PVC tube to mark the position of the mounting holes to be drilled into concrete/masonry for bolts.
3. Remove shower section. Drill 12mm (0.47') diameter holes, 45mm (1.77') deep, using the marks just created.
4. Insert expansion nuts into drilled holes. Place the bolt inside the expansion nut and TAP with a hammer to slightly expand the nut.
5. Remove bolt and place the base plate/lower tube over the holes and secure to surface with Aluminum bended pipe bolts and washers provided.
NOTE: Base plate will appear loose until shower is fully secured to the surface

Solar Shower: How to Assembe the Solar Shower

1. Lock nut and seal on to aluminum bended pipe, The pointed end of the seal ring must be upward. Then insert into opening on top of PVC tube.
Securely tighten the lock nut while positioning shower head to the correct orientation.
Make certain that the aluminum bended pipe is resting on the bottom of the seat.
2. Tightly wrap remaining thread end of stainless steel pipe with Teflon tape 16 to 20 times.
Then assemble the shower head
3. There are two ways could be chosen to connect the hose and the solar shower:
1) connect the solar shower and the hose with quick joint.
2) connect the solar shower with garden hose.
The max. operating pressure for the solar shower is 4 bar.
NOTE: Be sure hose is placed safely to avoid any tripping hazards.
NOTE: Make certain that aluminum bended pipe assembly is tightened securely and in place.

Solar Shower: Initial Set Up of the Solar Shower

1. Turn and lift shower handle to FULL ON HOT position.
2. To fill the shower with water, turn the stop cock of the garden hose on. Shower will take about 2 minutes to fill.
NOTE: Filling tube with valve in hot position ensures no air pockets are trapped in shower.
This procedure is used for initial set up only.
3. When water flows from shower head, turn shower handle off. Turning the shower off allows the water to begin heating.
4. Shower is ready to absorb sunlight and heat your water in the black solar tank.
NOTE: The time for heating the water depends on the outside temperature and the strength of the sunlight! Windy weather can influence the water warming also.
Advice: Do not shower during lightening storms.

Solar Shower: Usage of the Solar Shower

Caution: Adjust water temperature gradually from cool to hot to avoid injury.
1. Lift the handle to its ON position and you are ready to enjoy your solar heated water!
NOTE: The water supply must be turned on for shower to run.
-Warm water flow approx. 10.3 l/min.
-Cold water flow approx. 10.9 l/min.
2. Turn off water supply to shower when done.
Notice:
1. Due to the solar radiation the water in the solar tank can get hot. We recommend opening the handle in the middle position between hot and cold, then setting to desired temperature.
2. If shower has not been used for more than three days, we recommend running solar shower for 2 minutes to remove stagnant water. Stagnant water in a warm environment can provide a growth environment for hazardous bacteria.
3. The showerhead contains a sieve inside which must be cleaned regularly. If not the water pressure will become too high and the water tank could burst.
4. Standing water in the tank is not potable anymore.

Solar Shower: off season disassembly & storage

During the winter, the water has to be removed from the solar shower completely. Furthermore, the solar shower has to be knocked.
Down in winter and stored in a dry place. Failure to follow these instructions may cause frost damage on material.
FROST DAMAGE WILL NOT BE RECOGNIZED AS A CLAIM.
1. Turn off and disconnect garden hose.
2. Open handle and allow shower to drain (approximately 2 minutes).
3. Turn lock nut COUNTER CLOCKWISE to unthread, and pull aluminum bended pipe apart.
4. Unbolt shower PVC tube and pour remaining water out of unit.
5. Wipe down and store shower parts for next season.

Sand Filter: Is the Yescom Above Ground Swimming Pool Pump 1.5 HP compatible with an Intex Sand Filter?

Sand Filter: Is a sand filter required for the Yescom Above Ground Swimming Pool Pump 1.5 HP?

The maximum diameter of particles that can pass the pool pump is only 35mm. If any larger particles, it may prevent the pump from working properly and cause damages to the motor. It is highly recommended to use a sand filter.
Our Yescom 16" Sand Filter is sold separately.
